WP 4: Validation of integrated standardised SENSE-tool for sustainability assessment in food chains

The objective in this WP is to validate the integrated standardised SENSE-tool in pilot studies over food&fdrink supply chains of different products (meat, fish and fruit juice) in several regions in Europe. The SENSE-tool is the output of the integration of the developments in WP2 and WP3, which include environmental data collection system and sustainability indicators (from WP2) and the certification scheme concept based on EID (European Environmental Identification Document) developed in WP3.

The aim is to achieve a fully developed functional tool. At the end of the project it will be applicable for the selected food items, but the software structure and methodology developed will be modular and flexible, so it will be prepared to be easily adapted to other products.

This validation will also permit:

  • Assessment of the environmental sustainability performance of European food and drink products and their supply chains.
  • Investigate variability of similar food and drink products supply chains produced in several different European regions.
  • Establishment of the potential for environmental improvements through benchmarking.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 288974.
